This page contains information regarding policy changes throughout the state of Ohio.
In February 2009, State Senator Eric Kearney (D-Cincinnati) introduced legislation that would ban junk food from public school vending machines. All foods must pass strict guidelines (beverages cannot be carbonated, or more than 150 calories per serving, for example). School districts and public schools, under this legislation, are also restricted from entering into a contract with a distributor or producer of items that would violate the nutrition standards set forth within the document. Sen. Kearney has said that "Childhood obesity is affecting our children in record numbers," and that "it would be irresponsible for us not to take action to curb this trend." |
